It answers visitors' questions from the pages and documents you approve, shows the source under every answer, and offers an enquiry form when someone wants to talk to you. When your content has no answer, it says so instead of guessing.

You choose what it reads and check its answers in Hazelchat before anything goes live.

Get started

Create a free Hazelchat account and add your website. Pick the pages it should answer from and try a few questions.

Install this plugin. Under Settings > Hazelchat, paste the installation code from Hazelchat and switch loading on.

In Hazelchat, click Publish and switch on.

The free plan covers one website and 50 answers a month. Paid plans add more answers, enquiry emails and more websites: pricing.

What the plugin does

A field for your installation code or public widget key, with strict validation. Only the 64-character key is kept.

An explicit switch to load the widget on public pages.

Works with your cookie banner: Complianz holds the chat back until visitors agree, with nothing to set up. Real Cookie Banner, Borlabs Cookie and other banners follow a service named Hazelchat.

A link back to Hazelchat to check installation and test your published agent.

On a WooCommerce shop: the chat's product cards can add to the visitor's cart on the page, through WooCommerce's own Store API.

Optional order tracking for WooCommerce, off until you connect it: see which paid orders include something a visitor added to the cart from the chat.

Activation alone does not load the hosted service, and order tracking stays off until you type a code from Hazelchat. Links from the plugin and this page to Hazelchat carry campaign tags (utm_source=wordpress) so Hazelchat can count signups that start here; nothing is sent until you click one. No account password, administrative token or AI provider key belongs in WordPress settings. The public widget key grants no administrative access.

Answers use your reviewed, published sources. Source-only mode shows retrieved excerpts; AI-evidence mode writes answers from retrieved evidence. This plugin does not implement an AI engine, guarantee correctness or guarantee sales.

External services

This plugin connects to Hazelchat, a hosted service at https://app.hazelchat.co. A Hazelchat account is required; free and paid plans are available. Billing, content management and agent configuration take place on Hazelchat, not in WordPress. Pricing: https://hazelchat.co/pricing/

After an administrator supplies a valid public widget key, accepts the service connection and enables loading, visitors' browsers download https://app.hazelchat.co/widget.js. The script displays a chat frame from the same service. Browser network requests expose ordinary connection information, such as the visitor's IP address, to the service. When visitors use the chat, their questions, conversation data and any submitted enquiry details (name, email and message) are sent to Hazelchat. Configured AI-evidence mode sends questions and retrieved source passages to its model provider; source-only mode does not use a model. Retention and data requests are managed in Hazelchat. The plugin itself does not read or send WordPress users, posts or private pages, and sends no activation telemetry.

On a WooCommerce shop, the script tag also tells the chat where WooCommerce's Store API and cart page are on your site. When a visitor clicks Add to cart on a product card in the chat, their browser adds the product to their cart on your site through WooCommerce's own Store API; nothing of the cart is sent to Hazelchat. Hazelchat reads your published products from the same public Store API, as any visitor's browser could.

Order tracking (optional, off by default). Only after you switch it on in Hazelchat and type the code it shows into Settings > Hazelchat does this site make server-to-server requests to Hazelchat:

When you save the code: one request to https://app.hazelchat.co/api/integrations/woocommerce/connect with the code and your site's address. Hazelchat answers with a signing secret, which is stored in this site's database (not autoloaded) and removed on Disconnect or when you delete the plugin.

When an order that includes something a visitor added to the cart from the chat is paid, cancelled or refunded: one signed request to https://app.hazelchat.co/api/integrations/woocommerce/orders, sent in the background by WooCommerce's Action Scheduler. It contains the order's id and number, its status, its total after refunds, its currency, and for each line added from the chat the product and variation id, the quantity, the line total and the random chat reference. It never contains the customer's name, email, phone, addresses, payment or shipping method, coupons, notes or any other line. Orders without a line added from the chat cause no request at all.

The chat reference is a random code that Hazelchat adds to the chat's Add to cart; WooCommerce keeps it with that cart line and the order line (hidden in the order screen). Reports stop when you disconnect, turn widget loading off, deactivate or delete the plugin.

With Complianz active, the plugin lists Hazelchat as a service in Complianz, which then holds the widget script back until the visitor agrees. Hazelchat is filed under preferences where your banner asks for them, otherwise marketing; a banner that asks for nothing beyond functional cookies gets no entry. The widget itself follows a service named Hazelchat in Real Cookie Banner, Borlabs Cookie, Usercentrics, CCM19 and consentmanager, and Cookiebot's preferences when the wait box is ticked. It reads the consent in the visitor's browser and sends nothing about it to Hazelchat. The optional wait box (under More) still allows the small launcher script to download; it prevents the chat frame, chat API requests and session-storage access until the banner agrees or dispatches hazelchat-consent with detail: true. Withdrawing consent removes the widget but does not erase records already held by Hazelchat.

Service terms: https://hazelchat.co/terms/
Privacy notice: https://hazelchat.co/privacy/
Data processing agreement: https://hazelchat.co/dpa/

Credits

Bricolage Grotesque and Parkinsans (the outlined Hazelchat wordmark) are licensed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. Their license files are bundled with the local assets. No external fonts are loaded.

In WordPress, go to Plugins > Add New Plugin, search for Hazelchat, install and activate it.

Create a free Hazelchat account (or log in), add your content, check the details and try your agent. Under Website > Installation, add the website's domain.

Copy the installation code. The plugin keeps only its 64-character data-agent value, the public widget key.

Open WordPress Settings > Hazelchat. Paste the installation code or the key, accept the hosted-service connection, enable loading, and save. With a cookie banner, see "Does it work with my cookie banner?" below.

Remove any older manually pasted Hazelchat script and clear your page cache.

In Hazelchat, click Publish and switch on (Switch on Hazelchat if your published agent is unchanged). Installation is checked before the agent goes live. Refresh your website, then complete Test on your website.

Does this publish my agent or verify my website automatically?

No. Complete publishing, domain verification, enablement and the real website test in Hazelchat. Themes must call wp_footer(). With WooCommerce, Hazelchat can show your published products in answers and add them to the visitor's cart through WooCommerce's Store API; connect your products in Hazelchat under Products. It never reads carts or customer data. Order tracking is optional and reports only orders that include something added from the chat (see External services). Individual builder, commerce and optimization-plugin combinations require testing.

What does order tracking show?

In Hazelchat, Analytics shows "Orders after a chat": orders that include something added to the cart from the chat, as your shop reported them, with their order number so you can check each one in WooCommerce. A click is not an order, and an order after a chat does not prove the chat caused it.

Why is my widget missing?

Check the public key, both enable switches, your published agent and allowed verified domain. Clear page caches. Exclude app.hazelchat.co/widget.js from script combining, rewriting and delayed execution: the launcher needs its original script tag and data-agent attribute. A Content Security Policy must allow https://app.hazelchat.co in script-src and frame-src. A consent-gated installation waits for the visitor's consent in your cookie banner. WordPress admin, feeds, JSON requests and draft previews do not load the widget.

Does it work with my cookie banner?

With Complianz there is nothing to do. In Real Cookie Banner, add a service named Hazelchat. In Borlabs Cookie, add a service named Hazelchat with the ID hazelchat and tick "Wait for my cookie banner" under Settings > Hazelchat. The chat loads once visitors agree to that service and disappears when they withdraw. The list of banners is at https://hazelchat.co/integrations/cookie-banners/.

For another banner, tick the box under More and have the banner run this once visitors agree, and again with detail: false when they withdraw:

window.dispatchEvent(new CustomEvent('hazelchat-consent', { detail: true }));

Run it after the widget script loads, including when consent was given on an earlier visit. This plugin does not install a cookie banner and makes no claim of legal compliance.

What happens on deactivation or deletion?

Deactivation stops adding the script to newly generated pages and keeps settings for reactivation. Deletion removes the plugin's WordPress settings, including on each site in a multisite network. Clear page caches after disabling, deactivating, deleting or changing the key; cached pages and already-open browser tabs can retain the script. Pause the agent in Hazelchat to stop hosted requests immediately. Neither action deletes your Hazelchat account, sources or conversations or cancels a subscription.

Can I use it on WordPress.com?

Only if your WordPress.com plan permits installing plugins.
